Future Vision for Mozart´s Statement

My work always endeavors to reflect the mood and audible ambiance of a musical composition, but seen rather than heard. The attempt is always to invite the viewer to “see” the music and its temperament. As we know, music can reflect moods of passion, sadness, joy and a number of feelings, depending on what the composer envisions.

Future Vision for Mozart 9 (painting) embodies that concept in an attempt to invite the viewer to feel the attitude of this visual form of music. The work that is presented is the “Requiem”, as written by Mozart. Since Mozart died in Vienna before the Requiem was finished, the painting only involves itself with the work written in Mozart’s hand. Only portions of the Intoitus, Kyrie and Dies irae are presented in this particular painting.

A considerable amount of work was involved to present the visual translation into this painting as accurately as possible in terms of the diatonic scales and keys, not to mention the interpretation of moods throughout the work itself.

The process used is a term that I created back in the 80’s referred to as “Color Choreography”, which is represented later on in a color instructional textbook known as “Color Choreography: Foundational Studies, Investigations, and Discourses in Color Theory” *. Every color represents a specific mood or feeling, which is felt within the body of music itself. The color is quite literally choreographed into a compositional wholeness. Of course, color mood (music) interpretation may be different from person to person.

The Artist

My work is best described in a term that I created; “Color Choreography”. Basically, it is the amalgamation of music, color and dance.

We understand that music is an audible sound that often reaches our deepest emotions. Those emotions or moods are stirred-up by the art form of music.

Commensurately, as artists we understand that certain colors insinuate particular moods, for example red is often interpreted as sensuous or even angry, orange is passionate, or energy, and blues and greens are clam and tranquil, etc.

Let’s say that we attend a dance performance or opera, we can see that the performers are interpreting the music through movement and dance, for example. In the case of color choreography, it is color that is being choreographed itself to interpret the mood of a particular musical composition, such as Mozart’s Requiem, or perhaps a given contemporary musical arrangement.

It is color that is being used to visually interpret the mood that we feel from listening to the music. My belief is that the emotional component of a given composition can be visually read through abstract or non-objective arrangements of color and line on a given surface.

Color harmonies are much the same as musical harmonies, as well as color tempos and their relationship to musical tempos, etc. Both of these compositions exhibited in the BAP gallery express the dynamics of the music. The movement of line and color carry the music throughout the paintings, in my attempt to visually interpret the music and record the dynamics of it. Hence, the emotion and energy are captured forever.
