Martina Falk
Statement
I start my paintings intuitively, in a spontaneous play with colors and shapes.
Step by step and oftentimes in many layers, I develop further what shows on the canvas at the moment, thus creating color- intensive, dream-like soul landscapes, sometimes populated by surrealistic looking figures.
My concern is to reflect the beauty and magic of this world in my paintings. I want to convey a positive feeling to the viewer and at the same time awaken your own fantasy and sensuality. My adopted home Ibiza inspires me continuously through its bright colors, the Mediterranean nature, and its very own spirit.
I mostly paint with acrylic on canvas, using not only brushes but everything from a used credit card to a toothbrush or even my bare hands - according to the motto "no rules" - allowed is what brings the fun.
How I became a Painter
I am a self-taught artist. I’ve always loved colors and enjoyed observing patterns and shapes in my surroundings. But it was not until my mid-thirties that I got into painting as a form of creative expression - in a very playful and personal way at first.
From 2010, when I moved to Ibiza and, in a way, ended up re-inventing myself, I started to consider myself an artist and took my painting practice more seriously.
What really resonated with me, and got me started on the journey of becoming a painter, was an approach that gave me absolute freedom of expression, not being concerned about any technique or rules - just do what brings you fun – whether that is painting with lipstick or doing potato stamps. I also love the approach of “intuitive painting”, which encourages you to follow your intuition and be in the moment rather than painting according to a pre-formed idea in your head.
So for the last 10 years now, I have been on this journey, finding my personal style, letting every blank canvas be a new adventure, showing up with curiosity to where it will lead me.
